The Humpback Whale is one of the most sought-after sights in Maui. These amazing creatures only show up in Maui between December and April, so if you’re in Maui during those months, you can be one of the privileged few who will be able to see them. It’s an experience that very few people will ever have and one that no one ever forgets.
Pride of Maui has an enormous respect for the Humpback Whales and also for the importance of making your once in a lifetime whale watching experience the very best it can be. That starts with making sure that you have as much time as possible to spend with the whales. Our experience means that we know where to find them and our Maxi Powered Catamaran has the power to get you out there quickly. This means we don’t waste precious time searching for whales; we spend our time with the whales. In fact, we guarantee that you’ll see them or your next trip is free. We’ll get you to the right place at the right time, so that all you have to do is sit back and savor the experience.
Every year, thousands of humpback whales return to Maui to mate, calve and raise their young. You’ll have the chance to see females with their newborn calves and males in their full, romancing glory. These amazing creatures are huge, averaging forty feet and forty tons, but they’re also intelligent, serene, curious and even playful.
Whale Activities Likely To See
• Spy hopping….this is when the whales break the surface to see what’s going on around them. If the whale is close enough to the boat, you may be one of the few people on earth to look him right in the eye. You’ll be amazed at the intelligence and gentleness you see there.
• Tail slapping…..it’s believed that slapping their tails is a way for the whales to communicate with each other and maybe even with us. Be prepared-those huge tails send out quite a spray, but it’s an incredible way to get wet!
• Mugging….this is an affectionate term for when a female whale with a calf hides underneath our boat to shield her baby from possible injury by a male eager to make her acquaintance. This doesn’t happen on every whale watching cruise, so it’s the ultimate whale watching experience to have. When you go home, you can tell everyone you got mugged in Maui and then watch their disbelief when you explain!
Seeing the humpback whales, in their own environment, up close and personal, is a once in a lifetime experience that will last you the rest of your life. Being with these incredible creatures is life-changing. Once you’ve looked one in the eye, heard and felt their spray and watched them tend their young, you will never be the same.
