Donut Dynamite

Donut Dynamite is a specialty donut shop in Wailuku. They feature exceptionally delicious and unique donuts made fresh from scratch daily. It’s not your ordinary donut; it’s pure art. They are seriously beautiful, and it tastes as good as they look.

The owner, Madam Donut, develops each donut base specifically for its flavor and, whenever possible, with fresh local ingredients. Her mission is to make sure everyone has access to enjoy gourmet flavors through her donuts. Exclusive flavors include lilikoi caramel meringue, honey goat cheese walnut, Molokai sweet potato, and mango poi. Flavors are on a chalkboard, and upon your visit, you’ll see that it’s tough to decide on just one. No wonder why donuts come by the dozen!

Madame Donut is also serving up some exceptional malasadas with flavors like lilikoi and PBJ. She also makes a super tasty apple fritter. The menu changes daily, but you can call to require specific flavors of the day, or if you have a favorite, you can preorder a minimum of a dozen, maximum three dozen. Just make sure to give them at least two days in advance, and they are happy to oblige.

When we visited, they were offering a pizza donut that was called the “Brekkie Bun.” It was a delicious combo of house-made marinara, pepperoni, olives, garlic, basil, oven-dried tomatoes and mozzarella, and Pecorino Cheese. The best part is that it’s baked with a whole egg in the middle, incredible!

Maui Gold Pineapples

Created by former Maui Pineapple Company employees, the Maui Gold Brand Pineapple is the go-to on Maui for the best, sweetest, and most delicious pineapple. Grown on 1,350 acres of the slopes of Haleakala, it takes 18 months to grow one Maui Gold pineapple. The process has been tested and perfected over the last 25 years.

An interesting fact is that they are the only pineapple growers in Hawaii to employ people solely for assessing sweetness and consistency. The Maui Gold Brand is noted for its low acidity, extra sweet flavor, and even has three times the amount of vitamin C than other brands of pineapple. Visitors to Maui can take the only tour of a working pineapple plantation in the country, where each guest has a chance to taste-test the stages of the Maui pineapple while learning the history of the fruit. Want to try some for yourself? You can have some shipped directly to your door in boxes of 1, 2, or 6.

Pono Pies

Maui Breadfruit company’s kitchen is where Pono Pies are made from start to finish by Chef-Owner John Cadman and his son Kavika. Pono Pies are genuinely infused with the spirit of aloha. They use locally sourced ulu (breadfruit), macadamia nuts, and honey while maintaining a dairy, gluten, processed sugar, and GMO-free dessert. These things are what makes Pono Pies “Guilt-free from Maui.”

Cadman’s mission is to help restore the rightful place ulu once had in Hawaiian Culture. He gives educational presentations on the culinary creativity and product innovation at places like Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Cadman’s Pono Pies were a direct result of his experimentation with raw, vegan dessert to help ease his own craving for something sweet. He intended to make a healthy raw vegan dessert that tasted delicious. Seven years later, Cadman’s passion has turned his plan into reality.

Pono Pies are in all major health food stores on Maui, including Whole Foods, Mana, Alive and Well, Down to Earth, and Hawaiian Moons. They are also found Upcountry at Pukalani Superette and Rodeo General. You can also indulge in a slice of Pono Pies at many local eateries such as Duke’s, Fork & Salad, Hula Girl, Leilani’s on the Beach, and Tinroof. They’re also for sale on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island.

The Maui Coffee made with locally roasted coffee, and chocolate is a favorite, and the Lilikoi is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. All of the flavors sit atop a delicious crust made from a mixture of raw coconut oil, macadamia nuts, dried coconut, and sea salt. Be warned, once you take your first bite of one of Cadman’s Pono Pies, there is no turning back, and you will be hooked on a fantastic raw vegan slice of heaven.
