Do I Need to Know How to Swim to Snorkel at Molokini?

2 min read

You do not need to be a strong swimmer to snorkel at Molokini, but you should feel basically comfortable in the water. Many guests who snorkel at Molokini Crater are first-timers or casual swimmers.

Snorkeling here is designed to be supportive and guided, with multiple safety measures in place.

What “Comfortable in the Water” Means #

You don’t need formal swim training, but you should be able to:

  • Float calmly while wearing snorkel gear

  • Keep your face in the water while breathing through a snorkel

  • Move slowly and deliberately in the water

  • Follow crew instructions

If you can do these things, snorkeling is usually manageable even without strong swimming skills.

How Flotation Support Works #

Most Molokini snorkel tours provide flotation options to help guests feel stable and relaxed.

These may include:

  • Snorkel vests

  • Pool-style noodles

  • Other buoyancy aids

Flotation allows guests to:

  • Stay comfortably on the surface

  • Conserve energy

  • Focus on breathing and looking, rather than swimming

Using flotation is very common and completely normal.

Crew Support in the Water #

Safety at Molokini isn’t just about equipment — it’s also about active supervision.

During snorkeling, guests are supported by:

  • In-water crew members

  • Clear entry and exit guidance

  • Ongoing observation from the vessel

If you need assistance at any point, crew members are nearby to help.

What If I Feel Nervous Once I’m In? #

Feeling unsure at first is extremely common, especially for beginners.

If that happens:

  • You can stay close to the boat

  • You can take breaks as needed

  • You can exit the water at any time

  • You can choose not to snorkel at all

  • You can ask a crew member for assistance or pointers

Participation is always optional, and there’s no pressure to stay in the water longer than you’re comfortable.

Important Safety Notes #

Snorkeling is an ocean activity, and conditions can change. For that reason:

  • Captains monitor weather and water conditions continuously

  • Snorkeling locations may adjust for safety

  • Guests should always follow crew guidance

Crew decisions are made with guest safety as the top priority.

A Calm, Supported Experience #

For many guests, Molokini is their first snorkeling experience. With flotation support, crew guidance, and clear expectations, snorkeling can be a calm and enjoyable introduction to Maui’s underwater world.

If you have concerns before your tour, it’s always okay to ask questions during check-in or onboard.
