Midnight on Maui looks different from the deck of a boat. The shoreline pulls back into a line of lights, the harbor noise falls away behind you, and when Wailea’s fireworks go up you’re watching them over open water with nothing in the way — no crowd to see around, no parking lot to walk back to.
We run two vessels on New Year’s Eve, and they’re genuinely different evenings. The Pride of Maui is the full night out: prime rib and mahi-mahi served as the sun goes down, live Hula dancers, and room to move across 3,000 square feet of deck. The ʻElua is the smaller, more deliberate version: 36 guests, an air-conditioned main cabin, pupus and a premium open bar, and space to actually hear the person next to you.
Both put you in the same water at the same hour, both end with a champagne toast at midnight. The rest is a question of what kind of night you’re after.
Pride of Maui New Year’s Eve
Dinner & Fireworks Cruise
The Pride of Maui is the big-night option. Ninety guests, 3,000 square feet of deck across multiple levels, and a real dinner: roasted prime rib, teriyaki chicken, panko-crusted mahi-mahi, served as the sun goes down over the channel.
The premium open bar runs all evening: top-shelf spirits, wine, Maui Brewing Company, and non-alcoholic options for anyone driving or sitting this one out. Later, live Hula dancers on deck.
The upper deck is where most people end up as midnight gets close. It’s the best sightline on either vessel, and there’s enough of it that you don’t have to stake out a spot an hour early. We position the boat so Wailea’s fireworks come up in front of you, and we hold there through the show.
Then a champagne toast, and the first minutes of the new year somewhere in the channel with the lights of the island off the rail.

ʻElua New Year’s Eve
Fireworks Cruise
The ʻElua caps at 36 guests, and on a night like this that number is the whole point. It’s the same water and the same Wailea fireworks, with a third of the people.
The evening runs on pupus rather than a full dinner — kalua pork sliders, jumbo shrimp, an artisan cheese board — alongside the same premium open bar. Below deck, the air-conditioned main cabin has oversized panoramic windows and couches you can actually sit down on, which matters more than it sounds like it should on a long night. Outside, the observation deck and outdoor sofas face the show.
It’s the calmer version of New Year’s Eve. Still a celebration, just one where you can hold a conversation and the person pouring your drink knows your name by the second hour.

What to Expect on the Water
New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year on Maui, and most of the island’s celebrations happen on land — resort dinners, restaurant seatings, and a handful of public firework displays along the coast. All of them involve the same two things: a reservation you needed to make in advance, and traffic on the way home.
Going out on the water solves the second problem and turns the first into your whole evening. You board in Māʻalaea, you’re on the boat through midnight, and the fireworks happen in front of you rather than above a crowd.
A few things worth knowing if you’re planning the night:
Book earlier than feels necessary. Both vessels sell out most years, and they sell out well before December. If you’re reading this in the fall, you’re already close to the edge.
Dress for the water, not the restaurant. Island-festive is right: aloha shirts, sundresses, sandals. But the channel gets breezy after dark and it’s a long evening. Bring a layer you’d actually wear.
Give yourself time at the harbor. Māʻalaea parking fills up on New Year’s Eve, and check-in closes before departure. Arriving 45 minutes early is not overcautious on this particular night.
The view is the reason. From land you’re looking up at fireworks with several thousand other people. From the water you’re looking across at them, and the boat holds position through the whole display.

Pride of Maui ‘Elua: Check in at Slip 68 on the South Side of Ma‘alaea Harbor.
Check-in by 30 minutes prior to departure.
Pride of Maui: Departs at 10:15 PM and returns at 1:15 AM.
ʻElua: Departs at 10:45 PM and returns around 1:15 AM.
