Top 10 Places For Shave Ice In Maui

Not only is shave ice Hawaii’s favorite refreshing treat, but its creation is also very deeply rooted in Hawaii’s agricultural past. Back in the days of Hawaii’s sugarcane and pineapple plantations, it was the Japanese immigrant workers that first developed what we know of as shave ice today. The workers only had Sundays off to rest and began to take blocks of ice and shave them to create a light and cooling snow that would then be covered in natural syrups they made from the pineapple and tropical fruit grown in Hawaii.

Maui Best Shave Ice Places

When Hawaii’s Japanese people moved off of the plantations, many opened their own small businesses; general stores, restaurants, treats shops and convenience stores. As visitors began to travel to the Hawaiian Islands more often, Hawaiian shave ice became an international phenomenon.

Popularized by some of the most famous shave ice spots on Oahu like Aoki’s and Matsumoto, enjoying a Hawaii shave ice is now one of the most ultimate experiences enjoyed in Hawaii today.

If you’re headed to the beautiful Island of Maui, make sure to visit a few of our favorite shave ice spots. Throughout the Valley Isle, residents and guests savor this refreshing treat daily. No matter your age, shave ice is a local delicacy in Hawaii. Enjoy!

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice

Ululani’s Shave Ice has been one of Maui’s most favorite shave ice locations since 2008. Ululani’s is named after the owner, a woman that grew up in Kalihi, Oahu, and spent her youth eating the finest shave ice possible. Once just a pipe dream, Ululani’s Shave Ice is now available at three locations on Maui (Kihei, Kahului, Maui Lani), one on the Big Island, one on Oahu, one in Texas, and three in California!

The greatest thing about walking into an Ululani’s Shave Ice spot is knowing that you’re about to experience one of the most fantastic shave ice ventures in the world! Ululani’s offers over 45 flavors and some pretty awesome combination choices. Favorite flavors include tamarind, matcha green tea, pickled mango, lychee, and Thai tea. If you’re looking to taste a combo, guests can pick from an array of choices. Our favorites are the No Ka Oi (coconut, mango, and lilikoi) and Local Motion (mango, Li hing mui, pineapple and topped with Li hing mui powder). More toppings include Roselani Maui-made ice cream, hand-cut mochi, Azuki beans, and shredded coconut.

Bling Bing Maui

In the heart of Kihei, Bling Bing Maui offers up a unique twist on traditional Hawaiian shave ice. They have introduced the island to the delights of Chinese shave ice, or bàobīng.

This unique dessert, with its roots in Taiwan while under Japanese rule, has found a home on Maui. It appeals to those with a diverse palette, with its special approach to shave ice. Unlike its Hawaiian cousin, which primarily relies on flavored syrups, bàobīng at Bling Bing Maui is an artistic blend of sweet, fun toppings. Guests may pick from fresh fruit, boba, jellies, and their choice of condensed milk (regular, ube, matcha, or strawberry) to enrich their frosty treats.

Creating your personal (and Instagram-worthy) bàobīng masterpiece at Bling Bing is simple and fun! You start by first choosing a size, then a type of condensed milk. The adventure continues as you pick from an ever-changing array of toppings, like fresh fruits, lychee boba, sweet mung beans, and nutty taro. Those looking for an extra touch of flavor should try add-ons like Li Hing Mui powder, shredded coconut, mochi, or lilikoi jam to elevate their treats further. Vegan and dairy-free folks are not left out, as Bling Bing offers a vegan condensed coconut milk alternative. Everyone is sure to enjoy their delicious Maui bàobīng.

For a sweet and unique treat, add Kihei’s Bling Bing Maui to your list of vacation to-do’s!
