Hawaii is only state that grows coffee, and Americans consume more than a third of the total coffee grown in the world today. To sum up, we’re no stranger to a good cup ‘o joe. During your next trip to Maui, we encourage you to branch out from your regular Starbucks go-to and head to one of Maui’s best local coffee shops, all of which serve truly delicious variations of caffeine in a cup.

MAUI’S BEST COFFEE SHOPS
#1 Paia Bay Coffee
After their original opening in 2011, Paia Bay Coffee took a brief hiatus to move into a new location in Paia Town, just beside the Chevron Station on the Makai side. Customers are welcomed in a cozy outdoor garden seating area, dotted with string lights, fruit trees, plants, and simple table seating. If you didn’t already know you were in Paia, a good indication is the coffee shop clientele, which typically includes plenty of surfers, yogis, and artists.
Grab one of the many espresso drinks and breakfast items and enjoy a relaxing outdoor meal before hitting the beach or browsing shops in Paia Town.

#2 Maui Coffee Roasters
A local favorite since its opening in 1982, Maui Coffee Roasters specializes in small batch roasting of Hawaiian and international coffee. Located conveniently in Central Maui, arrive early to grab a seat at one of the small tables inside the brightly-adorned cafe, which tends to get crowded during peak hours. Browse local art while you wait for your order, and order one of their yummy breakfast bagels to kick-start your morning.
Hours: Open Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm (kitchen closes at 5 pm), and Sundays from 8 am to 4 pm (kitchen closes at 2:30 pm)

#3 MauiGrown Coffee
Ka’anapali Estate, once part of the Pioneer Mill sugar plantation, is a 500-acre coffee estate located 4 miles north of West Maui’s Lahaina Town. If you’re interested in the coffee-growing process or have some extra time to explore, self-guided tours of the plantation are encouraged, which offers excellent panoramic views of Maui. It’s a great place to sample several different kinds of coffee and learn more about the local growing and roasting process.

#4 Alba’s Cuban Coladas
Alba’s Cuban Coladas first opened in March of 2016. Not only is Alba’s one of the best places for coffee in Maui, but it’s also the first place on Maui that offers a menu full of Cuban delights. Here, you can enjoy a cup of powerful Cuban coffee that will get your day going! Cuban coffee is world renowned for its strength and rare flavor. Cuban coffee drinks pack so much potency that they’re typically enjoyed by a thimble-sized shot called a “buchito” in Spanish.
This Maui coffee spot is named after the owner’s Cuban abuela (grandma). Alba’s Cuban Coladas is a dedication to Cuban culture, a love for family and a satisfied belly.
When visiting Alba’s, look forward to awesome views and Cuban coffee drinks like Cafe con Leche (latte), Cortadito (double shot of espresso with steamed evaporated milk), Cuban Colada (sweetened espresso served in a demitasse) or a Bucci (shot of strong Cuban espresso).
Alba’s Cuban Coladas also serves up some mouthwatering Cuban dishes that will most definitely satisfy your Latin culinary cravings. Their Arroz Con Pollo is the best you’ll find West of Miami, and you should definitely taste their Bocaditos and Camarones Enchilados.

#5 Wailuku Coffee Company
If you’re the type that likes to sit back, relax and enjoy the view with your morning cup of coffee, this is “where the hip come to sip” on Maui, and the perfect place to do just that. Located in historic Wailuku Town, Wailuku Coffee Company is charming in a way that doesn’t try too hard. Grab a comfy seat at one of the several indoor or outdoor tables and people-watch to your heart’s desire. This is a great place to enjoy breakfast before exploring nearby Iao Valley State Park, or check out local art and live music during Wailuku First Friday.

#6 Hawaiian Village Coffee
This West Maui gem, located in a discreet strip mall in Kahana, offers a lovely mix of local souvenirs with a side of delicious coffee drinks and snacks. With a full espresso bar and several Hawaiian coffees to choose from, don’t ignore the case of freshly baked pastries and bagels delivered daily. Head to Hawaiian Village if the wind is causing a troublesome reading session at your nearest beach. It offers 5 Mac computers with printing capabilities (for a small fee), and the service is always friendly and prompt.

#7 Grandma’s Coffee House
If you’re planning to make the winding drive to the summit of Haleakala Volcano to witness a beautiful Maui sunrise, reserve some time to stop at Grandma’s Coffee House on your way back down. Grandma’s, located in Upcountry Maui’s scenic town of Kula, has been a long-time breakfast, coffee, and talk story staple for decades. Grandma began roasting and blending organic Arabica coffee in 1918, and four generations later, the family tradition is still going (and growing) strong. All of Grandma’s Coffee is hand-picked, pulped, dried and roasted onsite, and you can even see the roaster, now over 100 years old, through a viewing window in the shop.

#8 Bad Ass Coffee
Named after the legend of the Kona Nightingale, which was actually the bellowing sounds of donkeys carrying loads of coffee up and down the mountain, Bad Ass Coffee opened their first location in 1989 in Kona, Hawaii. Serving locally grown coffee from Molokai, Kauai, and Maui, in addition to 100% Kona coffee, Bad Ass Coffee is a casual and friendly place to stop for a morning or afternoon pick-me-up before hitting some of West Maui’s best attractions.

#9 Lava Java Coffee Roasters
Opened five years ago by two long-time Maui residents, Lava Java took over the former site of Kihei’s Bad Ass Coffee, located conveniently across the street from Kalama Park. After establishing a relationship with local coffee growers, they now happily serve 5 different Maui-grown coffees, four of which come from Maui-grower Kimo Faulkner’s Plantation. Customers are greeted with complimentary samples of the Frozen Kona Mocha, and the laid-back location directly across from the ocean makes this a tremendous early-morning go-to for coffee lovers in South Maui.

#10 The Coffee Store
Referred to as “Napili’s living room,” The Coffee Store is a local favorite on Maui’s northwest side.
With friendly, personalized service and a menu that utilizes the best in local ingredients, The Coffee Store serves an assortment of delicious, unique coffee drinks and a wide variety of homemade baked goods, including muffins, bread, pastries, quiche and more. This is an excellent spot for lunch or breakfast if you’re planning on exploring nearby Honolua Bay, and like any good coffee shop, expect a crowd.

BONUS: Kuau Store
Located on Maui’s north shore, Kuau Store is the last place to stock up on food and drinks before setting out to explore the Road to Hana.
While not strictly a coffee shop, Kuau Store serves up a wide assortment of goodies to ensure a smooth (and caffeinated) Maui morning road trip, including cold-pressed coffee, standard coffee drinks, local snacks, to-go picnic lunches, plate lunches, smoothies, juices and kombucha on tap. Located about a mile past Paia Town, Kuau Store is located just past the surfboard fence on your left-hand side, with plenty of parking for an easy morning stop.
